According to an online Stuff Business article, BusinessNZ has told employers how to prepare for an outbreak of coronavirus.
Want VS Need
It’s in times like these, that the need for remote working and business continuity planning becomes highlighted as a need rather than a ‘nice to have’. It’s all well and good being told to extend holiday pay or sick leave, but the financial ramifications over a 2 week period for a cautionary process could easily put SMEs into financial strife or delay commercial operations. The knock on effect being increased costs and delayed delivery of services to the general public.
With many businesses spread across multiple locations, sales people needing to be ‘by the phone’ for those all important general sales enquiries or consultants conducting crucial face to face business meetings, how can we possibly ‘shut up shop’ and recommend people stay at home?!
Personally, I’d rather err on the side of caution and have staff work from home if there was even the slightest possibility of potential contamination. Bypassing such health warnings with the typical can-do Kiwi mantra of “It’ll be alright mate!” is not something we should risk.
So, what can we do?
Whilst most businesses are familiar with Cloud technology having some form of cloud email system or providing remote access to business apps and data, many still rely on on-premise servers or phone systems. With evolving technology and exponential growth in the industry, centralising IT systems is easier and more cost effective than it’s ever been before.
So why would you want to move your IT to the cloud?
- Financial benefits to the business’s bottom line by moving from capital expenditure budget to operational expenditure budget
- Increased productivity by enabling employees to easily and securely access business data from remote locations
- Consistent user experience and adoption of business systems
- Control of IT administration tailored to the IT expertise within your business
